In the sizzling heat of an extraordinarily hot September at the Wienerberg, a recreational area in the south of Vienna, the body of a man is found, executed by a shot in the neck – Detective Maria Kouba thinks she’s in the middle of a mafia-film parody. But the dead man is real, and moreover it is Peter Pollak, the leader of Austria’s right wing party. Has he been murdered because of his divorce from the wife whose family hails from Iran? Or has his death something to do with the dubious prostitute he married in Las Vegas shortly after the divorce? Has he accumulated too many liabilities rambling in the gangland of Vienna? But this possibility doesn’t fit with the accounts of black money, revealed by the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. And what might the thistle mean that was found in his mouth?
To calm the shocked people a taskforce is organized, lead by Maria Kouba and her new partner, Andreas Batthyani. Immediately after that the next body is found, again executed by a shot in the neck and with a thistle in its mouth …
